Clues that help
- Left-hand traffic: cars drive on the left in Japan, direction signs are mostly blue.
- Licence plates: kei cars have yellow plates, regular cars white ones. The top line of the plate names the place of registration.
- Hokkaido: wide roads, open fields and red-and-white arrows above the roadside that mark the road edge in winter snow.
- Okinawa: subtropical plants, flat concrete houses and water tanks on the roofs.
- Roads: countless utility poles and cables; a yellow centre line means no overtaking.
