The map covers all of Switzerland, split into the Plateau (Mittelland), Eastern Switzerland, Graubünden, Valais, Ticino and Romandy. Only Street View imagery from 2012 or later appears.
Clues that help
- Language: German in the north and centre, French in Romandy in the west, Italian in Ticino and southern Graubünden, Romansh in parts of Graubünden. Place-name signs, ads and street names reveal the language region at once.
- Road signs: motorway signs are green, main-road signs blue and minor-road signs white. Yellow signposts mark hiking trails.
- Licence plates: white with black letters, starting with the canton code such as ZH, BE, VS or TI. If you can read a plate, you know the canton.
- Buildings: stone houses with stone-slab roofs in Ticino, Engadin houses with sgraffito in Graubünden, wooden chalets in the Bernese Oberland and Valais, half-timbered houses in Eastern Switzerland.
- Landscape: high mountains and narrow valleys point to Valais, Graubünden or Ticino; palm trees and lakes to Ticino; gentle hills with orchards to the Plateau and the east; the Jura ridges lie in the north-west.
- Transport: yellow PostBuses run everywhere, but the colours of city buses and trams often give away the city.
Scoring on this map
Switzerland is small, so every kilometre counts: 10 kilometres off scores about 3,600 points, 30 kilometres still about 1,800. Full 5,000 points within 25 metres.
